The following morning, Wednesday, October 19, V+K ate the provided breakfast at the hotel then headed into the park by about 8:15 or so. Due to overcrowding most of the year access to the north end of the park is via shuttle bus only. K+V quickly found out the parking lot at the Visitor Center was already full! Ken found a parking spot at the nature center just north of the South Campground then hiked back to the Visitor Center to join Virginia on the shuttle bus ride to the north end of the park. By 9:30 they were on a bus headed north, and by 10 they were headed up the 1.5 hour / 2.2 mile (round trip) 57 foot elevation change Riverside Trail.
